Expanding Your Horizons began with a question: "Why aren't there more girls in STEM courses?"
Started in 1975 by a group of professional women pondering this question who believed they could remove barriers to access, the first "Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics" conference was born. Held in March 1976 at Mills College in Oakland, CA, more than 200 young women attended and met women who were physicists, engineers, scientists, and physicians.
The movement grew to beccome a national nonprofit with local Expanding Your Horizons (EHY) conferences held in cities across the United States. Since then, more than 625,000 youth have attended and enjoyed learning about career possibilities in the math and science fields through EYH events around the world!
In Washington State, conferences are held in more than 10 cities throughout the year. Our Expanding Your Horizons conference is held each spring at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia, and is open to students from all counties in our region. While the national nonprofit is no longer in existence, EYH is here to stay.
Originally organized for decades by a dedicated group of volunteer committee members, conference planning and leadership has been under the financial and legal umbrella of a youth serving educaitonal justice-focused nonprofit, TOGETHER!, since 2019, and as a result of careful planning and transitions for many of our dedicated volunteers, TOGETEHR! is honored to take the lead in conference planning and operations in 2025. With our community's support, we are excited to work together to increase access to higher education and career planning in STEAM fields for girls, trans and non-binary students for years to come!
